How Will We Get There?
The experiment is yet to be designed and we are going to work through the issues together as they arise. We will build a community that will hold your interest while incorporating more students all along the way. I have seen many attempts of this type of network building but it has always seemed to be without focus or direction. Our focus will be to form a venue whereby the network can congregate and our direction will be to enlarge the community within your own school and then leverage your diverse backgrounds to move throughout the collegiate community.
The experiments we design will be based on the work of Duncan J. Watts in his book Six Degrees – The Science of a Connected Age published in 2003. You are all familiar with the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” where we are all connected to everyone else in the world within six degrees of our own personal realm. Well, life is a little more complicated than this but Watts has theorized how personal networks are arranged, how they interact and therefore how, when some critical mass is reached, can cause the entire greater network to cascade toward some predetermined outcome. It will be our goal to verify your networks, your network’s networks and see what direction this takes us.
